Importing Members

You can, of course, add members one at a time from the control panel. But if you are starting out with an existing list of users, it's handy to be able to set them all up at once.

When the membership feature is activated, an “Import Users” option is added to the “People” screen. You can upload a CSV with the list of users, and they will be automatically created.

The columns in the CSV must have the following headers:

  • email
  • first_name
  • last_name
  • roles

The roles column is optional. If roles is omitted, then the default “member” role is assigned to the user.

If you have configured a custom user profile, you may specify your custom fields in your CSV in addition to the required fields above.

When the import is completed, an activation email is sent to each user who was imported. This email contains a link for them to set their password.

Since the email is used as the login id for an account, if the importer encounters an existing user with that email, the row will be skipped (but the import process will continue).

While there is no limit currently set on import, we have tested up to 100 users at a time, and suggest that you import users in batches of that size. If you have a very large list, please contact us for assistance.
